Republican presidential candidate and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy has pledged that if he wins the presidential election in 2024 one of his first actions would be to pardon former President Donald Trump.
In a post on Twitter, he stated that the presidential election would be much easier to win should Trump not be in the race, however, he is a believer in “principles over politics.” This was why he was committed to pardoning Trump if he takes the White House.
This promise comes after Trump stated on Thursday night that he had received a notification that he would be federally indicted in connection to the Department of Justice’s probe into his handling and retention of classified documents after he left the White House. The probe has been handled by special counsel Jack Smith, and Trump is now scheduled to appear before the federal court next Tuesday.
Ramaswamy released a lengthy statement in which he argued that there were “two tiers of justice” and proceeded to align his opinion with many Republicans who have accused President Biden of pushing the Department of Justice to prosecute Trump.
Ramaswamy in his statement said that he did not think that he would ever “see the day” that the U.S. President would choose to deputize the Justice Department against his rival during an election. He then argued that they should not allow the United States to “devolve into a banana republic” where the governing party has the ability to use brute police force in order to arrest and get rid of its political opponents.
