Abortion Groups Got What?!

(RightIsRight.co) – A very hard pill to swallow for fellow American taxpayers arrived as a recent report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has uncovered that abortion advocacy groups, including Planned Parenthood, received nearly $2 billion in federal taxpayer funding from 2019 to 2021.

This finding, released on Tuesday, comes after a request early in 2022 by 142 congressional members, led by Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey.

The report sheds light on the concerns raised by these members, particularly about the use of taxpayer dollars to fund abortion services. According to the GAO report, Planned Parenthood alone received approximately $1.78 billion in this period and has seen an increase in federal support under the Biden administration.

Reacting to the report, Sen. Blackburn expressed her dismay to the Daily Caller News Foundation, stating, “It is appalling that big abortion providers are continuing to receive billions of dollars in federal taxpayer funding.” She emphasized the need for tax dollars to align with the nation’s values, expressing her commitment to ending taxpayer-funded support for the abortion industry.

Rep. Smith echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the significant number of abortions conducted by Planned Parenthood since 1970 and suggesting that the funds could have been better utilized in supporting businesses or providing comprehensive medical support for women and children.

The GAO report also revealed that Planned Parenthood received about $90 million in forgiven loans during the COVID-19 pandemic, originally intended for small businesses with fewer than 500 employees. Despite having over 16,000 employees worldwide, Planned Parenthood accessed these funds, a move criticized by Sen. Blackburn as an illegal siphoning of resources.

Under the Biden administration, funding obligations to Planned Parenthood surged from approximately $5.7 million to $27 million between 2021 to 2022, marking a 373% increase. The administration also reversed a Trump-era rule in January 2021, allowing funding to be used by foreign organizations for abortion services.

Besides Planned Parenthood, five other abortion providers, including MSI Reproductive Choices, received over $100 million in taxpayer funding, as per the GAO report.

The report’s release coincides with public sentiment on this issue. A 2023 Marist poll indicates that around 60% of Americans oppose taxpayer funding for abortion services, with 78% against such funding for abortion services in other countries. The poll, conducted from January 6 to 9, included 1,025 respondents from both political parties, with a margin of error of ±3.5 percentage points.

This disclosure by the GAO highlights a significant policy and ethical debate in the United States, particularly regarding the allocation of federal funds and the contentious issue of abortion services.
