(RightIsRight.co) – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton condemned an abortion case, saying that life in Texas is sacred by arresting and charging a midwife who performed illegal abortions in the state.
Maria Margarita Rojas, a Houston-area midwife, faces serious felony charges for allegedly performing illegal abortions and practicing medicine without a license in what may become a landmark enforcement of Texas’ strict pro-life laws.
Paxton stated:
“In Texas, life is sacred. I will always do everything in my power to protect the unborn, defend our state’s pro-life laws, and work to ensure that unlicensed individuals endangering the lives of women by performing illegal abortions are fully prosecuted. Texas law protecting life is clear, and we will hold those who violate it accountable.”
Rojas, who operated multiple clinics in Northwest Houston under names like Clinica Waller Latinoamericana and Latinoamericana Medical Clinic, was arrested early this month after being stopped by police.
She was charged with performing illegal abortions, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison, and practicing medicine without a license, which carries up to 10 years imprisonment and $10,000 in fines.
The arrest represents a significant moment in post-Roe vs Wade America as authorities enforce state laws protecting the unborn.
Paxton’s office is aggressively pursuing the case, seeking a temporary restraining order to shut down Rojas’ clinics and pursuing civil penalties that could reach $100,000 for each illegal abortion provided.
Another individual, Jose Ley, was also arrested in connection with the illegal abortion network. Both criminals face charges related to attempted abortions on a person identified as E.G. in March and another abortion allegedly performed in Harris County earlier this year.
The bond for each suspect was set at $500,000 for abortion-related charges and an additional $200,000 for medical license violations.
According to the attorney general’s office, Rojas’ clinics “unlawfully employed unlicensed individuals who falsely presented themselves as licensed medical professionals to provide medical treatment.”
Although Rojas does hold a valid midwife license until 2026, Texas law strictly prohibits non-physicians from performing abortions under any circumstances.
Waller County District Attorney Sean Whittmore referred the case to Paxton’s office after authorities discovered evidence of the illegal operation.
While the clinics advertised legitimate services like physical exams, ultrasounds, and vaccines, investigators allege their true purpose included providing illegal abortion services to vulnerable women.
This case comes as part of a broader effort by Texas authorities to enforce the state’s strict pro-life laws.
In a related case, Paxton’s office previously sued a New York doctor for providing telemedicine abortion services and abortion pills to a Texas woman. That doctor was indicted on criminal charges in Louisiana.
However, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has refused to comply with extradition efforts, setting up a potential Supreme Court showdown over states’ rights and abortion regulations.
Ultimately, Rojas was reportedly released on bond the day after her arrest, but the legal battle is just beginning.
If convicted, she faces decades in prison and substantial financial penalties that could serve as a powerful deterrent to others who might consider undermining Texas’ abortion restrictions.
