Barack Obama Wins a WHAT?

Barack Obama

( – Former President Barack Obama received an Emmy for narrating a Netflix documentary on national parks produced by the company he and his wife Michelle own.

Obama beat several contenders for the Emmy in the narration category, including British presenter Sir. David Attenborough, former NBA star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong’o.

The former president’s award was for narrating a five-part documentary miniseries about nature preserves around the world entitled “Our Great National Parks.”

It aired on the streaming service Netflix on April 13. It was produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, “Higher Ground Productions,” which recently signed a multimillion-dollar deal with Amazon’s Audible.

Barack Obama has become the second US president to win the TV prize. In 1956, President Dwight Eisenhower received an Emmy for “appreciation of television.”

That was a year after Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States, had held the first broadcast press conference in history. At the time, however, he was an acting, not a former president.

Obama, the 44th US President, has previously won Grammy Awards for the audiobook readings of his memoirs, “The Audacity of Hope” and “A Promised Land.”

Mainstream media have noted that he is thus “halfway to an EGOT,” i.e., a person who has won all four major entertainment business awards – Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, a status achieved by 17 people so far.

His wife and former First Lady Michelle Obama also won a Grammy in 2020 for reading her audiobook.

Former President Barack Obama’s other major public prize is the Nobel Peace Prize he received from the Norwegian Nobel Committee back in 2009, barely a few months after the beginning of his first term.

Although he was officially awarded for seeking nuclear disarmament and “for extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” the award has been widely presumed to be associated with the fact that he had become the first black President of the United States.

The three other US presidents who have won the Nobel Peace Prize are Theodore Roosevelt in 1905, Woodrow Wilson in 1919, and Jimmy Carter in 2002.
