(RightIsRight.co) – Google, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube control enormous amounts of information, news, and data flow. When just one of these platforms begins to censor content on its site, it changes the world and what users see drastically. Last year, Big Tech decided to eliminate then-President Donald Trump’s videos, posts and content from its sites, and now, some are turning to silence Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as well.
On Wednesday, July 21, Google-owned YouTube removed multiple videos from President Bolsonaro’s channel saying that “after careful review” they went against current coronavirus information policies. In a statement given to Reuters, they specifically highlighted that the encouragement of hydroxychloroquine and/or ivermectin as a treatment for COVID-19 is against the company’s policies.
Journalist and author Glenn Greenwald shared more specifics about the censorship:
YouTube removed 15 videos posted by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on the ground that they spread COVID misinformation (14 of them were live discussions with his ministers), and the Google-owned platform is reportedly close to removing his channel altogether. https://t.co/QAJxydD29n

This event reminds Americans quite clearly of a similar ban placed on then-President Trump that he’s still fighting in court. Since when does Big Tech get to decide what citizens hear from their political leaders, and who let them have so much power over it? Hopefully, Brazilians and other nations speak out together against Big Tech’s censorship in order to support the free movement of ideas on which democracy depends.
