(RightIsRight.co) – BREAKING NEWS: Leaving her family completely “devastated” and heartbroken, a North Carolina student was found dead a day after going missing while hiking in South Africa.
20-year-old Brook Cheuvront was reported missing on Saturday from Table Mountain in Cape Town, where she was studying.
According to a representative from SANPark, the organization that manages the mountain, friends became worried when she stopped responding and could not be located on a tracking app.
Additionally, rangers and trail runners searched for her until late the same day, but conditions made it impractical to continue.
On Sunday, an aircraft joined the search and discovered the American student’s body.
“The body of the missing hiker was found in an area which is part of Devil’s Peak, and was retrieved by EMS helicopter,” Western Cape police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie said.
“An autopsy will be conducted to determine the possible cause of death,” he added.
“She was recovered,” confirmed her father, Steve Cheuvront, who had planned to fly from North Carolina to assist in the search.
“We are devastated. God help me and us,” he wrote.
Even though the cause of Cheuvront’s death is still unclear, authorities have opened an investigation.
Furthermore, Cheuvront was a sophomore at the University of North Carolina, where she was in South Africa for an internship at the University of Cape Town.
Hailing from Newland, North Carolina, she was also the 2022 valedictorian at Avery County High School and a track runner.
In a social media post, SANParks addressed concerns about crime at Table Mountain, stating that such suggestions are “speculative and may cause unnecessary alarm which undermines worthy and successful efforts.”
South African authorities have urged people to avoid hiking on their own, suggesting it be done in groups of at least four people.
