CNN+ was terminated in less than one month, which must be an unprecedented record for a multimillion-dollar media venture.
The entire CNN+ staff was summoned together by Chris Licht, the new CEO of CNN, to hear the latest news.
Licht tried to spin the end of the streaming service’s demise because no one wants to admit they were part of a complete failure or unmitigated catastrophe.
According to The Verge, Licht stated in a memo that he wrote to CNN+ staff that the decision was not reflective of CNN+’s quality of talent or content.
Licht claimed that the decision was part of a more comprehensive strategy. He stated that consumers desire simplicity in a complex streaming market and an all-in-one service that provides better value and offers more experience than standalone offerings.
Although it sounds great and may have helped some people fired feel better, the truth is that less than 10,000 people use CNN+ every day.
Chris Wallace, who left Fox News to become the face of CNN+, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Given his multi-million dollar contract, it’s likely that he will be offered a regular CNN role.
