The incident occurred when a pickup truck crossed the center line and struck a tour van head-on.

The devastating crash on U.S. Highway 20 claimed the lives of five Chinese tourists, an Italian tourist, and the 25-year-old pickup driver from Texas.

Idaho State Police have determined that Isaiah Moreno’s Dodge Ram pickup crossed into oncoming traffic before striking the Mercedes passenger van carrying international tourists.

The investigation into why Moreno’s vehicle veered across the line remains ongoing. Due to the severity of the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an independent investigation.

The fatal accident occurred near Henry’s Lake State Park in eastern Idaho, approximately 16 miles west of Yellowstone National Park.

Following the collision, both vehicles erupted into flames, creating a horrific scene that required DNA testing to identify some of the victims.

The van was carrying twelve Chinese tourists, an Italian tourist, and a driver when the accident happened.

In addition, eight van passengers suffered varying severity injuries, with some requiring airlift transportation to nearby hospitals.

The road was closed for seven hours as emergency responders worked the scene and investigators gathered evidence.

Local resident Roger Merrill, who witnessed the aftermath, described catastrophic damage to both vehicles.

At the same time, the Chinese consulate expressed condolences and is now in contact with the families of the victims.

They are demanding a thorough investigation into the incident that claimed their citizens’ lives while vacationing in America.

Idaho Governor Brad Little also expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and is seeking answers about the crash.

This tragedy comes as Yellowstone National Park enters its peak tourist season. The park, which spans three states and attracts about four million visitors annually, sees most of its traffic between May and September.

The statistics show that 36% of international visitors to the United States prioritize visiting the national parks and monuments, making these roads critical infrastructure that deserves better safety measures.

Good Samaritans and first responders rushed to the scene to help, but the intensity of the fire that engulfed both vehicles made rescue efforts extremely difficult.

Photos captured by passersby showed flames and thick smoke rising from the wreckage, underlining the catastrophic nature of the collision that has now devastated multiple families from around the world who came to experience America’s natural beauty.
