DeSantis Signs Groundbreaking Election Bill

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

(RightIsRight.co) – With concerns about election fraud still as serious as they were in the 2020 Presidential Election, Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis took action this week.

DeSantis signed a bill to establish a police force to pursue voter fraud on Monday. This new law was a top priority for many Republicans in light of the allegations of former President Donald Trump that his reelection was stolen.

DeSantis, who is running for reelection and considered a potential 2024 GOP presidential candidate, made voting legislation a focus this year, pushing the Republican-controlled legislature to create the policing unit in a speech where he referenced unspecified cases of voter fraud, which remain a priority in his party.

Republicans across the country have been vocal in their support for restoring public confidence in elections. They have passed several voting laws that aim to establish new rules around mail-in and early voting over the past two years. Those methods were initially popular because of the coronavirus pandemic, which disrupted in-person voting.

To review fraud allegations and conduct a preliminary investigation, the law establishes an Office of Election Crimes and Security within the Florida Department of State. DeSantis must appoint a team of special officers from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate the allegations of election law violations.

The existing state law in Florida permitted the governor to appoint officers to investigate election law violations, but it did not require him.

Bottom line: DeSantis wanted to be proactive in combatting potential election fraud in future elections. Along with the Florida legislature, he has new powers to act if allegations of voter misconduct arise.
