(RightIsRight.co) – Happening Now: According to an initial draft of a majority opinion by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito circulated within the United States Supreme Court, the court appears to be poised to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion.
The draft opinion was leaked to reporters at Politico, which reported the news in an exclusive late on Monday.
Politico describes the draft opinion as an “unflinching repudiation” of the 1973 decision that guaranteed federal constitutional protections in America for abortion rights and the 1992 Planned Parenthood Casey ruling that upheld the legal principles of Roe.
“Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Alito writes in the draft opinion.
“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” Alito writes. “It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”
Drafts of Supreme Court opinions can change throughout deliberations by the court on controversial cases. The justices could write other drafts or reach deals that change the final vote. The draft Politico received was written in February. Politico stated that it wasn’t known if there were any different drafts.
The court’s final decision could come between now and the end of June when the Supreme Court finishes this term.
