(RightIsRight.co) – General Motors announced a massive recall for over 90,000 vehicles due to a significant transmission issue that threatens driver safety and could cause a crash.
The massive recall affects numerous Cadillac models and Chevrolet Camaros manufactured between 2019-2022.
While government regulators have been slow to act on many safety concerns, they’ve finally addressed this dangerous transmission defect.
General Motors announced the recall after discovering a serious transmission control valve issue that suddenly causes front wheels to lock up while driving.
The problem affects vehicles with 10-speed transmissions, including 2020-2021 Cadillac CT4 and CT5 models, 2019-2020 Cadillac CT6 models, and 2020-2022 Chevrolet Camaros.
This defect creates a significant hazard for drivers, who could lose control of their vehicles without warning.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that only 1% of the recalled vehicles contain the defect, but that is still over 900 potentially dangerous cars on American roads.
“In rare cases, the wheels may experience a momentary lock up,” the NHTSA stated, downplaying what could be a life-threatening situation for unsuspecting drivers.
The company initially tried to ignore the issue. When a 2021 Cadillac CT5 owner reported a front tire lock-up in early 2023, GM opened an investigation but quickly closed it, claiming the problem was not serious enough to warrant action.
“Safety of our customers is the highest priority for the entire GM team,” GM claimed in a statement that rings hollow considering they initially dismissed customer concerns.
Moreover, GM finally decided to reopen its investigation in November only after 115 reports of lock-ups and an actual crash.
The company’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority approved a safety recall on February 27, months after they first became aware of the dangerous defect.
Meanwhile, American families have been driving these vehicles, unaware of the potential danger.
The problem stems from “excess wear” on transmission control valves, which causes harsh shifting and wheel lock-ups.
GM’s solution is a software update that forces the transmission into fifth gear when a problem is detected.
While this might prevent accidents, it is essentially a band-aid fix rather than addressing the root cause of the failing parts.
GM plans to notify affected owners by mid-April and provide the software update at no cost to customers.
The company has already incorporated new transmission control software in newer models, including the 2021 Cadillac CT6, 2022 Cadillac CT4 and CT5, and 2023 Chevrolet Camaro, suggesting they knew about the issue well before taking action for existing vehicle owners.
This recall comes as American automobile manufacturers continue struggling with quality control and safety issues while simultaneously pushing expensive electric vehicles that most hardworking Americans do not want and cannot afford.
For tens of thousands of GM luxury car owners, this means yet another inconvenient trip to the dealership for a problem that should have been prevented through proper engineering and quality control.
