Neighbors Make Heroic Rescue

( – Proving that not all heroes are firemen or wear capes, neighbors from a community in New Jersey helped two people escape a devastating house fire thanks to their swift and courageous actions.

Jim Miller, who jumped out of bed and ran across the street when he saw the alarming scene, shared with CBS Philadelphia, “That whole front of the house, it was just a ball of flames.”

The fire happened shortly before 6 a.m. on Saturday in West Deptford Township and upon the arrival of fire officials, the house was fully consumed by flames. Fortunately, neighbors had already pulled the residents, a husband and wife, to safety.

Miller described the traumatic moments when they realized the couple was trapped, stating, “We started banging on the basement windows, and we broke it out and all of a sudden, we heard a woman’s voice, ‘We’re here, we’re here.’ I’m going where, where are you?”

Another neighbor, Tom Carey, was alerted by his dog and witnessed the glow from his window. He rushed outside and urged his neighbors to evacuate, while his wife warned others on the street.

“I went to the back door and just started banging on the door, banging on the windows, literally anything to make noise,” Carey recounted to CBS Philadelphia and emphasized their strong bond with the affected neighbors.

“They’re like family like they’re so nice, and they welcomed us with open arms as soon as we moved in,” he continued.

Investigators stated that firefighters struggled for over an hour and a half to control the intense blaze and the house is presumed to be a total loss.

The West Deptford Fire Chief praised the neighbors as true heroes and stressed that the outcome might have been tragic without their quick intervention.

Jim Miller echoed the sentiments of many neighbors, asserting, “That’s what neighbors do, that’s what we do. I’m just glad I was there, and I’d do it again.”

Emergency responders took the rescued couple to a local hospital for treatment.  Their condition remains unknown and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Fox News Digital has not yet received a response to its request for comment from the Woodbury Fire Department and West Deptford Fire Chief.
