(RightIsRight.co) – During a recent event at the Hudson Institute in Washington, Nikki Haley declared her intention to vote for former President Donald Trump in the upcoming general election despite their sharp disagreements throughout the Republican primary.
This announcement marks a significant shift given the rivalry that characterized their interactions during the primaries.
“I will be voting for Trump,” stated Haley, who previously served under Trump as the U.N. ambassador. She emphasized, however, that Trump needs to engage more with her supporter base.
“Having said that, I stand by what I said in my suspension speech,” Haley added. “Trump would be smart to reach out to the millions of people who voted for me and continue to support me and not assume that they’re just going to be with him. And I genuinely hope he does that.”
Her remarks underscored the Republican Party’s near-unanimous support for Trump, even among those who have criticized him previously.
Furthermore, Haley ended her own presidential campaign two months ago and took some time before publicly backing Trump. She had criticized his approach to governance and international relations and questioned his fitness for office due to his age.
Trump, known for his abrasive style, had repeatedly targeted Haley with the pejorative “Birdbrain,” though he eased off after clinching the Republican nomination in March.
Concurrently, Joe Biden’s campaign has been actively courting Haley’s supporters, who are perceived as potential swing voters. Biden’s team is reportedly setting up a “Republicans for Biden” initiative aimed at attracting Haley’s supporters in key battleground states.
In her speech, Haley also criticized Biden’s foreign policies and his management of the U.S.-Mexico border.
The event marked not only her re-entry into the political arena but also her affiliation with the Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington.
Earlier this month, Haley met with her donors in South Carolina to express gratitude, which was described as a thankful gesture rather than a strategic political move.
While Haley’s current support for Trump could align her with his base in any future Republican primary, it might also alienate moderate and anti-Trump voters, complicating her political trajectory.
