(RightIsRight.co) – Ohio’s electoral integrity faces scrutiny as six noncitizens have been indicted for illegal voting in crucial 2016 and 2020 elections.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced six indictments for voter fraud, emerging from nearly 140 referrals by Secretary of State Frank LaRose.

The indictments came after seven cases were presented to grand juries, six of which resulted in indictments, while one was not pursued.

Meanwhile, these cases involve five legal U.S. permanent residents, and a noncitizen accused of participating in multiple elections, notably in 2016 and 2020.

This action marks a significant move to uphold electoral integrity. Illegal voting is classified as a fourth-degree felony, carrying penalties of up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine. Two of these indictments specifically relate to the 2020 election.

“The right to vote is sacred,” Yost said. “If you’re not a US citizen, it’s illegal to vote – whether you thought you were allowed to or not – you will be held accountable.”

Moreover, the actions primarily focus on Franklin County, whom three of the defendants were from.

Overall, these indictments are part of broader efforts by Yost and LaRose. They have scrutinized the legality of nearly 600 voting-related referrals, emphasizing noncitizen accountability to ensure election security.

This enforcement process comes as Ohio maintains vigilance by routinely updating voter registration lists and checking citizenship status through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Yost claimed, “This law is being enforced, and I think this should enable everybody to take a deep breath and be more confident that our elections are, in fact, safe and secure and that noncitizens are not going to vote.”

“And if that would happen, the few that slip through the cracks will be held accountable,” he added.

In light of these developments, both Yost and LaRose have faced criticism regarding the timing of such announcements as elections loom ahead in 2024.

Nonetheless, it is important sending a clear message that American electoral rights will be protected, and noncitizen voting remains a serious offense with severe repercussions.
