Republican officials were quick to express their support for former President Donald Trump after he claimed that the Department of Justice would issue an indictment in connection to the classified documents investigation.
Trump revealed that he was set to appear in a Miami federal court on Tuesday. In his Truth Social Post, he specifically said that this was a “Dark Day” for the country which is in Decline.
The classified documents case has been handled by Special Counsel Jack Smith.
Republicans were quick to back Trump and even accused the Biden administration of corruption and of having weaponized the Justice Department against the former President.
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) took to Twitter to express his support for Trump and to state that this was indeed a “sad day.” Similarly, Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Tex.) also stated that this was a “dark day” as the U.S. President had now started arranging for his political opponents to be arrested.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) in his own statements accused Biden of using the Department of Justice to attack parents who have been dubbed “domestic terrorists,” to spy on Catholic churches, harass the Democrats, and to indict his political rival, Trump. He added that Biden had completely “trampled the rule of law” just for his own benefit, which endangered the entire country.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) following the news of the possible indictment said that it was “unconscionable,” and proceeded to place the blame on the U.S. president. He also pointed out that Biden had classified documents in his possession for years.
