Ryan Routh faces severe allegations of attempting an assassination on President-elect Donald Trump in South Florida.

The trial, initially set for February 2025, now starts on September 8, 2025.

Routh, a 58-year-old resident of Hawaii, has entered a plea of not guilty.

Routh’s defense team requested the delay citing the need to review extensive evidence and explore an insanity defense.

They must declare any insanity defense or mental competency requests by early February.

This postponement comes despite Judge Aileen Cannon labeling past delays as “unreasonable.”

Ryan Routh owned over 17 cellphones and several other electronic devices.

Police and surveillance videos require thorough review, which his attorneys argued warranted additional prep time.

The seriousness of the allegations influenced Judge Cannon’s decision to grant a new trial date, reports CBS Miami.

Prosecutors assert Routh plotted to assassinate Trump, even allegedly targeting him with a rifle during a golf outing on September 15, 2024.

Before he could fire, a vigilant Secret Service agent intervened, leading to Routh’s arrest.

He now waits in a federal jail in Miami, held without bail.

Routh’s charges include attempted assassination, assaulting a federal officer, and firearms offenses.

A conviction could result in a life sentence.

This trial follows a separate previous attempt in Pennsylvania where Trump was wounded.

The justice system must now prove it can deliver swift accountability.
