Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) described former President Donald Trump as “Putin’s puppet” in a sequence of tweets on Wednesday (May 10).
Christie used his Twitter thread to slam Trump’s remarks about the Russia-Ukraine conflict while Trump conducted a town hall with CNN.
At some stage in the town hall, Trump claimed that he could remedy the conflict between the warring nations in “24 hours” however avoided answering moderator Kaitlan Collins’ question about whether he desired Ukraine or Russia to win the conflict.
Trump asserted he didn’t “think in terms of winning and losing” but rather embraced thinking of resolving the conflict to “stop killing all these,” adding he wants Ukrainians and Russians to “stop dying.”
A common Trump critic, Christie stated on Twitter that the former President had become Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “puppet.
He pointed to Trump refusing to mention a desire for Ukraine to win the battle with Russia, describing it as “more proof” that the former President is still “Putin’s puppet.”
The battle in Eastern Europe has become a dividing factor among Republicans. Some push for the U.S. to help Ukraine indefinitely, and others have taken issue with how much the Biden administration spends on the war.
An audience member also asked Trump if he would continue supplying Ukraine with weapons, another question he decided not to answer.
“If I’m president, I could have that war settled in one day,” Trump declared in response.
Christie jabbed at that declaration in another tweet, calling Trump’s declaration “ridiculous” and sharing his suspicions that Trump would end the war “by turning Ukraine over to Putin and Russia.”
