Democrats are calling for an inquiry into Jared Kushner’s international business ventures following federal prosecutors’ recent charging of Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden.

In light of Biden’s plea deal, Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin, Democratic fundraiser Jon Cooper, and MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan have urged for an investigation into Kushner’s connections with Saudi Arabia.

A court filing from the Department of Justice on Tuesday (June 20) disclosed that Biden had accepted a plea deal, admitting guilt to two tax misdemeanors. Additionally, he has agreed with federal prosecutors to resolve a third felony gun charge.

There has been Democratic scrutiny on Kushner after a firm he was involved in received a $2 billion investment from the Saudi government soon after he left the White House. This investment has led to questions about whether Kushner’s personal financial interests had any impact on foreign policy decisions during his time as a senior adviser in the Trump administration.

Raskin, who holds a high position in the House Oversight Committee, commented on Biden’s plea deal. He stated that the development proves that the Department of Justice is an unbiased institution that investigates based on “the evidence of actual crimes” and is not driven by political motives, as some Republicans have claimed.

The Democrat expressed disapproval of the GOP’s angry response and accused the Republicans on the House panel of using the plea deal as an opportunity to complain about the actions of a U.S. Attorney appointed by Trump.

In a statement on Tuesday, Raskin pointed out how GOP “colleagues have refused to investigate Jared Kushner and Donald Trump’s receipt of billions” given by “autocratic regimes.”
