Former President Donald Trump highlighted that President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland’s decision to appoint Special Counsel Jack Smith to investigate a political rival wasn’t a coincidence, nor was the “fake indictment.”
Taking to Truth Social on Saturday (June 17), Trump called out, “CROOKED JOE BIDEN” for pressing “deranged Jack Smith to do this FAKE INDICTMENT” on him “to take the pressure off the fact that they caught Joe Biden stealing FIVE MILLION DOLLARS.”
Trump posted the text post alongside a video with the same message.
Trump’s message was accompanied by campaign statements that continued to condemn “election interference” as a scheme to meddle in elections.
In a campaign statement on Saturday, Trump also thanked Hugh Hewitt, who wrote a Washington Post op-ed denouncing the indictment’s timing.
The statement suggested, “Thank you very much to Hugh Hewitt — 100% true, this is all about election interference by the communist misfits and thugs.”
Hewitt’s op-ed in WaPo condemned the timing of the indictment with the upcoming presidential election and said that Garland must answer questions, including conflicts of interest.
“This case seems certain to drip into every day of this election cycle,” Hewitt emphasized, suggesting this was because the “country needs to hear from Garland.”
Hewitt queried why the Justice Department had “dawdled so long in bringing its expansive charges” and only filed them as “the 2024 election season gets underway.”
Hewitt explained that he had “always dismissed conspiracy theorists” and railed against ‘deep state’ paranoia while defending those working for the FBI and those in the Department of Justice.
“But this sequence of events has painted both the FBI and DOJ a deep blue in the eyes of red America” and would be “difficult to undo.”
