On Monday, former President Donald Trump called Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell “a disaster” only a few hours after McConnell was released from the hospital following his recent accident.
On Wednesday, McConnell, 81, was taken to George Washington University Hospital after tripping and hitting his head during a private dinner for the Senate Leadership Fund in Washington, D.C. According to McConnell’s spokesperson David Popp following the accident, McConnell suffered from a concussion but he is currently in recovery. Following his release from the hospital, McConnell has been moved to a physical rehabilitation center where he will also receive physical therapy for a “minor rib fracture” incurred.
McConnell is not expected to return to Congress until his recovery is complete. That did not stop Trump from mentioning the Senator during a campaign event in Davenport, Iowa. As he told his crowd at the event: “We do have to do something about Mitch McConnell.”
He proceeded to call him a “disaster” as along with “his 10 guys” he has been giving President Joe Biden all of the votes they need for their agenda to proceed. He added that it “doesn’t make sense” for the Biden administration to be getting everything “they want.”
Trump then called for McConnell’s removal as he is a “big problem.”
The two men had once been allies but following the 2020 presidential election and its aftermath, Trump has frequently attacked McConnell for his willingness to collaborate with the Biden administration and the Democratic lawmakers. With McConnell’s help, the Democrats have passed bipartisan packages including the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill from 2021 or the $1.7 trillion omnibus bill passed in December.
