62-year-old Marites Buenafe was found dead on a challenging mountain trail after failing to return to her Norwegian Bliss cruise ship.
Buenafe, a physician affiliated with the University of Kentucky Healthcare system, was discovered 1,700 feet below Gold Ridge by an Alaska Army National Guard helicopter on July 3.
The 62-year-old tourist had been reported missing after the Norwegian Bliss departed Juneau without her on July 1, launching a massive search operation that sadly ended in tragedy.
Security footage captured Buenafe at the top of Mount Roberts Tramway around 7:30 a.m. on the day of her disappearance.
She had texted her family that she planned to hike from Gold Ridge to Gastineau Peak in Juneau, a challenging 4.1-mile trek typically taking about three hours to complete.
When Buenafe failed to return for the ship’s scheduled 1:30 p.m. departure, alarm bells rang.
Authorities were notified around 3:15 p.m., initiating what would become a multi-day search and rescue operation involving Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Juneau Mountain Rescue, drones, and helicopters.
The search continued on July 2 with professional volunteers, police, and rescue teams combing the rugged Alaskan landscape.
Despite their best efforts, no signs of the missing doctor were found until the following day, when her body was located in a remote area requiring specialized recovery equipment and personnel.
Norwegian Cruise Line issued a statement after the discovery:
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the guest. Our CARE team is providing support to the guest’s family and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”

This tragedy serves as a reminder of the dangers facing American tourists venturing into Alaska’s wilderness without proper precautions.
While the exact cause of Buenafe’s death remains unknown pending an autopsy by the state medical examiner, the incident underscores the importance of safety protocols in America’s most remote territories.
Buenafe had been traveling on the Norwegian Bliss, which was on a weeklong round-trip tour of Alaska from Seattle.
Her next of kin have been notified of her passing, and authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine what went wrong.
This tragedy should be a reminder of nature’s unforgiving power and the critical importance of proper preparation, communication, and safety measures when venturing into remote territories, even when those adventures begin from the comfort of a luxury cruise ship.
In a society that values individual freedom and exploration, personal safety must remain a priority.
