After a successful and surprising bank heist, a father and son team were found dead following a standoff with police at a motel.
Shaun Fallon, 56, and his son Zachary, 27, died from gunshot wounds after refusing to surrender to authorities following their heist.
The robbery unfolded at the Chelsea Groton Bank in Connecticut, where the Fallons, wearing medical masks, passed a note to a teller demanding cash and implied they had weapons.
The pair successfully fled with an undisclosed amount of money, temporarily evading capture.
Police quickly tracked the suspects’ getaway vehicle to a Super 8 Motel, setting the stage for a tense six-hour standoff.
Authorities evacuated the motel and a nearby business as the situation escalated, prioritizing public safety while attempting to negotiate with the increasingly desperate criminals.
Throughout the standoff, the father and son duo claimed to possess an arsenal of weapons that would have caused significant harm to law enforcement and civilians.
“The suspects told authorities that they were armed with both firearms and explosives and refused to surrender,” Groton police reported.
“This was an extremely dangerous and volatile situation, and I want to commend the bravery and professionalism of all the law enforcement personnel involved in bringing it to a close,” Groton Police Chief L.J. Fusaro said.
The situation came to a dramatic head around 11:05 p.m. when “two gunshots were heard inside the suspects’ hotel room,” authorities claimed.
Likewise, law enforcement deployed a drone to assess the situation, revealing that “apparent gunshot wounds incapacitated both suspects.”
A bomb squad later cleared the room, finding no explosives despite the criminals’ threats.
Emergency responders transported both Fallons to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. The younger Fallon died on June 13, while his father succumbed to his injuries three days later on June 16.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has yet to determine the official cause and manner of their deaths.
At the same time, local law enforcement demonstrated remarkable restraint during the standoff, proving that well-trained police officers remain the backbone of community safety despite nationwide calls to defund them.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident and have requested that anyone with relevant information come forward.
