The 59-year-old Native American actor Jonathan Joss voiced the iconic character John Redcorn and was set to return for the highly anticipated Hulu reboot.
He became another victim of senseless violence in a country where neighborly disagreements can turn deadly in an instant.
The shooting occurred in the 200 block of Dorsey Drive on San Antonio’s South Side.
San Antonio Police Department officers responded to the scene and found Joss lying near the roadway, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite officers’ attempts to save him, emergency medical services pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police quickly apprehended 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, Joss’s neighbor, who has been charged with murder.
Authorities confirmed the shooting followed an argument between the two men, though specific details about the nature of their dispute have not been released as the investigation continues.
The timing of Joss’s murder is particularly heartbreaking, as he was preparing for a career resurgence with the upcoming “King of the Hill” revival.
Just hours before his death, Joss posted an Instagram video discussing the reboot, which was scheduled to premiere on Hulu in August.
This murder marks the second tragedy to befall Joss this year. In January 2025, he lost his childhood home and three beloved dogs in a devastating fire.
The home held deep significance for the actor, as it was built by his father for his mother in 1957 and contained a lifetime of memories and family history.
“This wasn’t just any home – it was the house his father built for his mother in 1957, filled with a lifetime of memories. Tragically, 3 of Jonathan’s dogs also perished in the blaze, adding immeasurable emotional pain to an already heartbreaking situation,” the GoFundMe page read.
Joss’s career was marked by perseverance and talent. In 1996, following the death of original actor Victor Arron, he took over the role of John Redcorn in “King of the Hill” during season 3.
Beyond his iconic voice work, Joss appeared in numerous productions, including “Parks and Recreation” as Chief Ken Hotate and roles in “Tulsa King,” “Ray Donovan,” “True Grit,” and “The Magnificent Seven.”
His death highlights the ongoing issue of violence in America, where even minor disputes between neighbors can escalate with tragic consequences when firearms are involved.
The San Antonio Police Department continues its investigation into the circumstances surrounding Joss’s murder.
Meanwhile, fans across the country mourn the loss of a talented actor whose voice brought joy to millions through his character portrayals.
The upcoming “King of the Hill” reboot will now serve as both a celebration of his talent and a reminder of a promising career that was tragically cut short.
