In a move that will cause a Democrat meltdown, Representative Greg Steube (R-FL) is making waves with a bold proposal to rename Washington D.C.’s metro system.
Specifically, the congressman is pushing for the “Trump Train” and rebranding the transit authority as “WMAGA.”
His bill threatens to withhold millions in federal funding unless the transit system adopts names honoring President Donald Trump and his America-first agenda.
Steube introduced the “Make Autorail Great Again Act,” which would block all federal funding to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) until it changes its name to the “Washington Metropolitan Authority for Greater Access” (WMAGA).
The legislation is a clear nod to the president’s famous “Make America Great Again” slogan and would also rename the Metrorail system as the “Trump Train.”
The Florida congressman is not mincing words about his motivation. WMATA currently receives tens of millions of dollars in federal funding every year.
However, according to Steube, taxpayers see little return on this investment: “WMATA takes $150M a year in federal funds and delivers nothing but delays, dysfunction, and decay.”
“My bill blocks funding until WMATA is renamed WMAGA and the Metrorail becomes the TRUMP TRAIN,” the lawmaker added.
His bill aims to force accountability on an agency that has long faced criticism for operational problems despite significant federal support.
“WMATA has received billions in federal assistance over the years and continues to face operational, safety, and fiscal challenges,” Steube said.
“In the spirit of DOGE, this bill demands accountability by conditioning federal funding on reforms that signal a cultural shift away from bureaucratic stagnation toward public-facing excellence and patriotism,” he added.
The congressman’s proposal arrives at a time when WMATA is claiming some operational improvements.
The transit authority reports 47 consecutive months of ridership growth with over 800,000 daily trips, and projects a $20 million revenue increase in fiscal 2026.
However, customer satisfaction metrics remain mixed, with decreasing satisfaction for Metrobus and MetroAccess services.
Steube’s bill is about more than just changing names as it is also about challenging the entrenched bureaucracy in Washington that continues to receive taxpayer dollars despite ongoing performance issues.
WMATA gets about $144 million in federal support, which constitutes 6% of its FY2026 budget.
While critics have attacked the proposal on social media, Steube has been actively promoting the bill around Capitol Hill, distributing informational pocket cards to fellow lawmakers.
“Like any struggling institution, WMATA needs a fresh identity that aligns with efficiency, service quality, and renewed public trust,” Steube said. “These new names serve as a bold rallying point for much-needed reform.”
The “Make Autorail Great Again Act” represents another creative approach by Republicans to challenging business as usual in Washington and honoring President Trump’s lasting impact on American politics.
By targeting an institution at the heart of the D.C. swamp, Steube’s legislation aims to bring accountability to a system long overdue for reform while celebrating the America First agenda.
