What Happened on West 95th Street
Just after 11 p.m. on Friday, a red SUV pulled up to a large group of people gathered in the 200 block of West 95th Street in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood. Two people inside the vehicle opened fire into the crowd, then drove away. Officers who arrived first found a 32-year-old woman shot in the back and a 44-year-old man with graze wounds. Both were taken to the hospital in fair condition.
In total, police confirmed at least 13 people were shot. [4] Victims ranged in age from 17 to 47. A 26-year-old woman was listed in critical condition at the University of Chicago Hospital. Two men were also reported in critical condition. One victim refused medical treatment. The injured were spread across four hospitals, including Christ and Trinity. Police said at least 21 people were shot across the entire city since Friday evening, with four of those shootings proving fatal. [1]
Scene Evidence Points to Heavy Gunfire
The crime scene told a brutal story on its own. Video from West 95th Street showed more than 100 evidence markers placed by investigators. [4] Multiple car windows were shattered, a nearby bus stop was struck by bullets, and glass covered the sidewalk. ABC 7 Chicago reported roughly 25 shell casings from both rifle and pistol rounds found across the block. The scale of physical evidence left no doubt that a large, sustained burst of gunfire tore through the area.

Police were still working to piece together exactly what happened. As of the latest reports, no suspects had been named, no vehicle had been publicly identified as recovered, and no arrests had been made. The motive remained unknown. Investigators described the shooting as a drive-by and said the red SUV fled the scene immediately after the gunfire stopped. The investigation remained in its early stages.
Chicago’s Ongoing Violence Problem
This shooting happened while people were celebrating Juneteenth, a federal holiday. Witnesses told reporters the crowd had gathered for the holiday when the SUV pulled up. Chicago’s South Side has seen repeated mass shootings tied to holiday weekends and large outdoor gatherings. Gun violence remains a serious and ongoing problem in the city, even as a University of Chicago Crime Lab analysis found that murders and non-fatal shootings in Chicago declined in 2024. [23] One bad night can still shatter lives in an instant.
Chicago rapper Risky Bands was reportedly among the 12 people injured in a mass drive-by shooting on Chicago's South Side.

President Trump publicly called out Illinois Governor JB Pritzker over the city’s violence following this weekend’s shootings. Conservative critics have long pointed to Chicago as proof that soft-on-crime policies and weak leadership fail ordinary citizens — especially those living in high-crime neighborhoods who deserve safety, not excuses. Families celebrating a holiday should not have to dodge bullets. Until Chicago’s leadership gets serious about holding criminals accountable, nights like this will keep happening.
