FDA WARNING: In an alarming situation that affects Americans’ dining tables, the FDA issued a deadly food recall that has escalated to its highest danger level.

This warns Americans that tainted produce distributed across several states could cause death.

The agency’s Class I designation for tomatoes supplied by H&C Farms reveals yet another food safety crisis that threatens American families.

The agency upgraded the tomato recall to Class I status by the end of May, indicating “serious adverse health consequences or death” could result from consuming the contaminated products.

This highest-level warning affects tomatoes distributed by Williams Farms Repack LLC throughout Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina between April 23 and April 28.

The initial recall was announced on May 2 after Williams Farms Repack received notification that tomatoes from H&C Farms might be contaminated with Salmonella.

It involves various packaging formats, including 50 three-pack trays, 77 10-pound boxes, and 419 60-count two-layer boxes of tomatoes.

Ray & Mascari Inc. also issued a recall for their “Vine Ripe Tomatoes” sold in clamshell containers in a separate but equally concerning development.

This pull likewise received a Class I designation and affects tomatoes distributed through Gordon Food Service Stores across multiple states, including Illinois and Indiana.

Moreover, the FDA defines a Class I recall as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

Although no illnesses had been reported at the time of the recall announcements, Salmonella remains a serious threat to public health.

The bacteria can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain in healthy individuals.

For vulnerable populations such as young children, elderly people, and those with compromised immune systems, the infection can be deadly.

Meanwhile, the pull originated when Southeast Tomato Distributors alerted Williams Farms Repack about potential contamination.

“On April 29, 2025, the firm was notified via telephone by Southeast Tomato Distributors that tomatoes supplied from H&C Farms may be contaminated with salmonella,” explained Williams Farms Repack LLC in their announcement.

Consumers who purchased tomatoes in the affected states are urged to check their produce immediately.

The agency advised against consuming any potentially contaminated tomatoes and recommends either disposing of them or returning them to the place of purchase.

This latest food safety crisis underscores the ongoing challenges in America’s food supply chain.

Approximately 14% of food recalls in the United States last year were due to possible Salmonella contamination.

And these recurring incidents raise serious questions about the effectiveness of current food safety protocols and inspection procedures.

Furthermore, health experts recommend thoroughly washing produce, sanitizing food preparation surfaces, washing hands frequently, and preventing cross-contamination between foods to protect your family.

Those with weakened immune systems should take extra precautions, especially when consuming raw produce.
