Highlighting the dangers facing lone hikers in America’s wilderness, local officers revealed the tragic discovery of a 31-year-old missing hiker’s body in a nature preserve.

Search teams found Hannah Moody’s remains just 600 yards off-trail from the Gateway Trailhead parking lot at McDowell Sonoran Preserve, where her vehicle had been left.

Moody was reported missing on the evening of May 21 after friends could not reach her by phone.

Her unexpected disappearance immediately triggered concern among local authorities who considered it uncharacteristic behavior for the woman.

Law enforcement responded with a substantial search operation that included foot patrols, drone surveillance, and helicopter assistance from the Phoenix Police Department.

After searching until 11:30 p.m., crews resumed their efforts the next morning with additional resources.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Air Unit ultimately located Moody’s body around noon on May 22, approximately 16 hours after she was reported missing.

Her remains were found in an area that required aerial detection, explaining why ground teams had initially missed her during the night search.

“Tragically, Hannah’s body was located by search crews. Our hearts go out to her family and friends. This is an active investigation. Please respect the family’s privacy at this time. We appreciate everyone’s efforts in helping to locate Hannah,” Scottsdale police stated.

While investigators have stated there are no immediate signs of foul play, the circumstances surrounding Moody’s death remain unclear.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death as Scottsdale detectives and crime scene personnel continue their investigation.

The search operation demonstrated effective coordination between multiple agencies, including the Scottsdale Police Department, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, and the Phoenix Police Department.

The Gateway Trailhead at McDowell Sonoran Preserve remains a popular hiking destination in Scottsdale, but Moody’s death highlights that even well-traveled trails can present unexpected dangers.

As temperatures rise in Arizona’s summer months, hikers’ risks increase substantially, making proper preparation all the more critical.

As the community mourns this loss, Scottsdale authorities have requested privacy for Moody’s family and friends during this difficult time.

The investigation continues as officials work to provide answers about the circumstances that led to this tragic outcome.
